What’s the best thing about being an artist?
Is it you think you get to do whatever you like! As easy as that may sound we simply create a torture for ourselves during the imagination process that can cause artist insanity syndrome..
Is it you think you can take copious amount of drugs or drink after reading all those beat-nik books by Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski and Jack Kerouac so spend endless sleepless nights with drunken dysfunctional girlfriends producing not one piece of productive material.

Is it the half finished manuscript that was lost when your bag was stolen from the pub, the days of work lost when instead of file save you pressed file delete, the pictures you never got back from the printers because the shop was blown to bits by a terrorist bomb, the painting your drunk girlfriend threw red wine over in a moment of white heat, all these pieces we knew were pointless in trying to revisit or repeat..

Has it got anything to with all the songs you write that end up in the bin, the proposals you put into the council for the latest crazy installation, the myriads of funding applications to every arts organization under the sun just to be rejected again and again and again.

It’s that one song, one painting, that one line poem, that particular lighting set-up, that one stage set, that one sequence in that film, a certain sculpture in that extensive exhibition, that one club of decor, the linen stitch in that sequinned dress – that brought one smile of a face from a new fan, a deep consciousness and understanding in time and space, the joy of just being for those oh so brief, precious seconds.
That’s the best thing about being an artist.

I liked this ..keep writing
