Metropolis Screen Print Posters

Over the last year or two there have been quite a few posters produced  for the Fritz Lang 1927 silent classis “Metropolis” by contemporary artists. Some are really great and I wanted to share the images of those added to my collection. If you reading this, hope you enjoy them.

First up is my favourite by Laurent Durieux, produced for Dark Hall Mansion’s seminal film series of screen print posters. This first one (regular) was produced in addition of 200.

Some ‘Must Have’ Mondo releases at SDCC 2013

Ok, this weekend has seen the San Diego Comic Convention in USA at which apparently has been mega busy by all reports. Things sold out pretty quickly and though I tried to get a poster buddy to get me a few posters bsides the Ansin Conan poster I already secured I’ve not had any luck., So, over the coming months I will be trying to buy on the secondary market or will try to acquire through trading some of my older stuff for a number of ‘must-haves”. Here are the ones that I would really like to own in my collection and the best in my opinion on what has been on offer, though understandbly, I ain’t seen everything. These are my faves and the ones marked * are my must haves:

If you reading this I hope you agree these are some great pieces of movie poster art.

Poster Artist Tyler Stout (Pt. 1)

Tyler Stout is the most indemand of the band of merry contemporary artists working for Mondo right now, and he had been doing so for some years. Known for his earlier gig posters which he continues with today, his involvement with Mondo the boutique film memorabilia arm of Alamo Drafthouse is what catapulted him into stardom and to become one of the most talked about and collectable amongst poster art fans. His earlier posters hung about on the Mondo page for weeks before they sold out and were available for around just $30. Take these four of the most sought after movie posters that he did for Mondo, his early editions of these cult movies: Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, The Big Lebowski and Blade Runner, these are absolute masterpieces of movie art, but I would never be able to own them, currently changing hands for $2000 – $3000 on the collectors market.

Ok, here’s image of four of his poster that I will never own and can only look at on the web, if you are new to this art, check out these posters below (I’ll posting more of Tyler in due course). Click on the links for super size images.

Big Trouble in Little China (Reg), 2007, edition of 300, print 24×36″, original price $30, last known price for one that changed hands was $1550 earlier this year.

Martin Ansin’s Conan the Barbarian

Ok, so today is the on-line pre-sale for a number of Mondo posters for the San Diego Comic Con convention next week. Mondo are releasing a number of posters (about 12 I think), all are going to be quite indemand. The most popular of these are going to be the ones by Martin Ansin and Olly Moss (Moss is doing Sprited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle (both with Japanese text) and I’ll post more about them later.

But first, Martin Ansin. Two years ago Mondo teased teased the world with an Ansin sticker for Conan and ever since rumours have been rife amongst fans that Ansin would be producing a poster for the movie, finally its here. For this year’s SDCC he will release a regular and variant. Now frustringly, you can only buy these if you are lucky enough to go to San Diego (well apart from the fact that tickets sell out a year in advance), but I am the wrong side of the pond so off course won’t be able to go. Mondo are doing a pre-sale release on their site today but you can only buy them if you have a ticket for the SDCC as only you can pick up the poster from Mondo’s stall on the day. I’m luck enough to get a poster buddy who is going to SDCC to get the Moss posters for himself and he’s trying to get the Conan poster for me. Off course, its a big iff, may not strike lucky as these are gonna sell out within minutes of going on the site.

Metropolis - Final Metropolis - Final

Left is the regular which will have an edition of 450 and the variant (right) will have an edition of 225, and its a 24″ x 36″ screen print.

Now just to get the record straight, I’m not really a fan of this movie at all, but I love Ansin’s work so gotta have this print in my collection, so fingers crossed that my buddy is able to score at the on-line pre-sale today. And the bonus is that Mondo are making the artist available at the time of pick up to sign prints so that is gonna be nice.

EDT: 16th July – pleased to report my Poster Buddy managed to grab me one of these (reguiar print above), really pleased that he will be having it signed for me by the artist Martin Ansin at the Comic Con on Friday. Ansin is travelling over from Uruguay to San Diago for the Comic Convention.
